SBI Investment Portfolio Company UPPTHERA Prepares to Enter Clinical Trials with PLK1 Protein Degradation Cancer Technology
- SBI Investment portfolio company UPPTHERA is developing a targeted protein degradation (TPD) technology that, unlike conventional inhibitors, directly eliminates PLK1, a protein that regulates the cell cycle. Having received U.S. FDA clearance last October for a Phase 1/2a trial in small cell lung cancer (SCLC), it is preparing to enter the clinic.
- In preclinical studies, it achieved complete response (CR) in SCLC models with no tumor regrowth for six to eight weeks after dosing stopped. In a combination study in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), median survival in the venetoclax combination group was 42 days, about twice that of the untreated group (21 days).
- CEO Choi Si-woo said the company is in licensing discussions with multiple companies alongside its clinical preparations, drawing attention to whether this will lead to a technology export success for Korean biotech.
